New Delhi, India, currently exhibits the highest levels of air pollution, with an Air Quality Index exceeding 400, significantly surpassing the World Health Organization’s recommended safe limit of 50. This alarming situation is primarily attributed to industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust, and the widespread practice of agricultural waste burning.

Cities Under Siege

Dhaka, Bangladesh, also faces a severe air quality crisis, with studies indicating a reduction in average life expectancy of up to seven years. In Kanpur, India, air pollution is implicated in over 80% of reported illnesses. The primary concern is particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less (PM2.5), which readily penetrates the respiratory system and enters the bloodstream, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Lagos, Nigeria, experiences significant air pollution due to the prevalence of diesel-powered generators. The geographical location of Lima, Peru, surrounded by mountains, exacerbates the problem by trapping pollutants and creating a concentrated atmospheric inversion.
