The hardships endured by women are vividly illustrated through personal accounts, such as my grandmother’s experiences toiling relentlessly in the family business while sacrificing her aspirations.

The rigid class system further exacerbated these inequalities. The four-tiered hierarchy of samurai, farmers, artisans, and merchants severely restricted social mobility. Lower classes faced pervasive discrimination and poverty, enduring lives far harsher than we can readily imagine.

The untold stories of the common people, often absent from historical narratives, are crucial to understanding the true historical context. Hidden discrimination against groups like the Eta and Hinin, ostracized and forced into degrading occupations such as corpse disposal and leather tanning, starkly reveals the flaws within the social structure. Their suffering underscores the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices that contributed to the rights and freedoms we enjoy today.
